Wales’ 14th Purple Plaque is for peace campaigner and force of nature Annie Hughes Griffiths, unveiled in Aberystwyth on 3rd November 2023. Annie was born Annie Jane Davies in 1873 in the Ceredigion village of Llangeitho. She became a well-known figure in London-Welsh circles and was deeply involved in the Welsh League of Nations and efforts to create a lasting peace after WW1.

Annie spearheaded the organisation of a remarkable peace petition signed by nearly 400,000 women in Wales in 1923 – estimated to be three quarters of all the women in Wales at the time.

She went on to lead a women’s ‘peace delegation’ which, in 1924, took the petition across the Atlantic. With the help of American women’s organisations it was presented to a huge gathering of women in New York representing thousands of activists from across the USA. The delegation then made their appeal to the US President Coolidge at the White House and another gathering of prominent women in Washington.

Annie then toured America taking the message of the peace appeal to the American Welsh and helped give a new impetus to the women’s peace movement in the US.

The petition, which was started as a reaction to the horrors of World War One, was bequeathed to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC in 1924. It has now been repatriated to Wales and will reside in the National Library in Aberystwyth.

Mae’r pedwerydd Plac Porffor ar ddeg a ddadorchuddiwyd yn Aberystwyth ar Dachwedd 3ydd 2023, yn anrhydeddu’r ymgyrchydd heddwch egnïol, Annie Hughes Griffiths. Ganwyd Annie Jane Davies fel yr oedd y pryd hwnnw, ym 1873 ym mhentref Llangeitho yn Sir Gaerfyrddin. Daeth yn ffigwr adnabyddus yng Nghymru ac ymhlith Cymry Llundain. Bu’n amlwg iawn yn Undeb Cynghrair y Cenhedloedd Cymru a’r ymdrechion i greu heddwch parhaol ar ôl y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf.

Arweiniodd Annie yr ymdrech ryfeddol i gasglu deiseb heddwch a arwyddwyd gan bron i 400,000 o fenywod yng Nghymru ym 1923 – sef tri chwarter holl fenywod Cymru ar y pryd yn ôl un amcangyfrif. Aeth ymlaen i arwain y ddirprwyaeth a gludodd y ddeiseb ar draws yr Iwerydd ym 1924. Gyda chymorth ymgyrchwyr blaenllaw America, fe’i chyflwynwyd mewn cinio enfawr yn Efrog Newydd i gynrychiolwyr miloedd o fenywod o bob ran o’r Unol Daleithiau. Aeth y ddirprwyaeth ymlaen i gyflwyno eu hapêl i Arlywydd America, Calvin  Coolidge yn y Tŷ Gwyn ac i gynulliad arall o fenywod blaenllaw yn Washington.

Yna, fe deithiodd Annie ar hyd a lled America i gyflwyno’r apêl am heddwch i’r Cymry Americanaidd. Fe roddodd ymweliad y ddirprwyaeth ysgogiad o’r newydd i fudiad heddwch menywod yr Unol Daleithiau. Rhoddwyd y ddeiseb, a grëwyd fel adwaith i erchyllterau’r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf, i Sefydliad y Smithsonian yn Washington DC ym 1924. Erbyn hyn mae wedi ei dychwelyd i Gymru i gartref parhaol yn y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol yn Aberystwyth.
